There’s an old song by Clint Black, “Put Yourself in My Shoes,” that effectively describes empathy- the ability to recognize and actively relate to another’s experiences. While the song may be old and forgotten by many, the old adage defines empathy in a way we can all understand. But how does this trait or the lack thereof affect the culture of your company? Research and the CEO of Apple, Tim Cook, encourage placing empathy at the core of organizational culture. One reason being, employees thrive in a work environment that is empathetic to their needs.
